Fire Fight Australia: A “Live Aid-Style” Concert Benefiting Brushfire Disaster Relief

In 1985, the music world offered their talents for the Live Aid super-concert charity to support South African famine relief. The rock band, Queen, was one of the highlights from the Live Aid performances and conversely, the event was a highlight of their stardom.

Sources claim the Land Down Under has experienced the worst brushfire season on record. Originating in the southeast region of New South Wales back in November 2019, the fires have swept across all six Australian states. Roughly 25.5 million acres have been destroyed, devastating over two-thousand homes and an estimation of one billion animals. To give some perspective, that amount of acreage is comparable to the size of South Korea! The eastern Australian states of Queensland, New South Wales, and Victoria account for eighty-four percent of the devastation. Due to the smoke, the capitol city of Sydney (on the Australian east coast of the New South Wales state) recorded the worst pollution it’s ever seen on January 1st, with an air quality index twenty-three times higher than what is considered hazardous. This so much and so problematic that the smoke crept into birthing rooms, stopped MRI machines from working, and triggered respiratory distress in an elderly woman, leading to her death. The pollutant air quality has even affected New Zeland, which is over 1,200 off Australia’s east coast. Their skies, clouds, and glaciers have been uncharacteristically discolored. The smoke haze has even canceled tour operations. With Australia in the midst of summertime and the normal peak of their fire season around late January or early February, their disasters could only continue and worsen.

Over thirty-five years after Live Aid, the music world does it again with Fire Fight Australia, a charity concert for Australia’s brushfire relief efforts taking place Sunday, February 16th. In fact, its even been touted as a “Live Aid-style concert”! And again, Queen (+ Adam Lambert) will take the stage at ANZ Stadium for the event, which comes the day after a show on their Rhapsody Tour. They will be joined by Alice Cooper, Olivia Newton-John, k.d. lang, and many other worldwide and local music icons, some of which have yet to be announced. All proceeds will benefit Australia’s rural and regional fire services, the RSPCA Bushfire appeal, the Red Cross Disaster Relief and Recovery and other organizations.

Concert tickets went on sale January 13th and have unfortunately sold out as of this writing. The Australian-based vendor Ticketek is the only authorized dealer, meaning that tickets purchased from anywhere else are not guaranteed to be valid and offer access to be event. As of the end of January, broadcasts of the event have been announced through Australia’s Channel Seven, Foxtel, and the 7Plus streaming service.

Live Aid was an ambitious endeavor for its time, lasting around sixteen hours between two major venues set between majorly different time zones –three venues and zones if you count Oz for Africa held in Australia the day before for that matter. Satellite broadcasting was still fairly new in 1985. Nonetheless around sixty music acts reached over a billion viewers in 110 countries and raised one hundred and fifty million pounds. Thirty-five years later, an international broadcast or live stream of some kind should be no problem. Around twenty-one acts and counting are already confirmed on the Fire Fight Australia bill, and ultimately we have the power of the internet which stars everywhere have used to react or respond to the crisis, sharing heartbreak or urging support on social media. One most significant posts was from Airbourne, an Australian rock band, who tweeted:

“Rockers worldwide – if you haven’t heard yet, Australia is literally burning – the smoke can be seen from space and has even turned the white snow caps over in New Zealand black.

“Too many Aussies have lost their loved ones – they’ve lost homes and livelihoods, and over half a billion animals have met their fate in these devastating fires.

“Firefighters – a lot of whom are volunteers – and all emergency personnel, including the large number of vets, are going way beyond the call to duty and we thank them with all of our hearts. Australia can’t survive without their staunch, courageous and never-say-die commitment to stopping these fires.

“Any help from you will be greatly appreciated and will go a long way – even just one pound, one euro, one dollar or one peso can help. Every little bit helps rockers – Australia is burning.”

Others have harnessed star power, influence, and/or their own wealth, like Sir Elton John at a recent concert drew attention to the bushfire devastation and pledged one-million dollars for relief efforts. Metallica donated $750,000 and Pink has pledged $50,000. New Jersey deathcore band, Fit for an Autopsy, and Blink-182 have geared merchandise sales towards fundraising. As news of the brushfire disasters have gone global in the last month or so, the calls to action and responses alone, ahead of the concert event itself at that, are what really have been “Live Aid-style”.

What can you do? Below are links to a few organizations taking donations or to merchandise sales supporting relief efforts or to other information about the disasters or charity efforts. This list just came together from this article’s source material and a little additional research and is by no means comprehensive, but ideally its a starting point for someone interested in lending a hand or knowing more.

MVD Entertainment Group

Some people have a hard time finding cinema that fits their taste. One company has been serving artists and audiences for quite some time by providing a different selection of films. The cool thing about MVD is they offer the brand new concert that you want on DVD and a selection of independent content as well. It’s great to see such a selection in one place! The best part is they are a great and friendly place to buy from!

Audiences everywhere are beginning to fall in love with a new generation of concerts on DVD. Most recently Owl City and Adele have been added to the selection over at MVD. You can expect to find great artist like Taylor Swift and others in the selection as well. From CDs to DVDs, they seem to have it all. If you have a more independent taste in music and concerts on DVD then there are some great things for you there too. They offer many unauthorized documentaries, which are basically independently filmed stories of the artist and their journeys, something you don’t find everywhere! If you are looking for your favorite artist, or perhaps something different, MVD is the place to go.

Carpenters In Performance 1972

I am a huge fan of concerts on film! Recently MVD informed me about a fantastic performance on DVD by the Carpenters. For those of you who think you don’t know who the Carpenters are, consider for a moment if you have heard any songs from the 70s, chances are if you have then you probably heard a song or two by them. It’s rare that my generation gets a glimpse into the past in such a way that not only shares the culture and styles of the time, but also shows the amount of talent that was prominent during the time period.

The DVD is filmed in Japan and not only gives you a front row seat to a Carpenters concert, but it also shows how they were a worldwide favorite during the 70’s! The performance is phenomenal and a must-see for any fan of their music, and even those who have yet to hear of them. There is such a rich history behind the band and their music, and they have withstood the test of time. To purchase a copy for yourself, just check out MVD’s website or click here: Carpenters Live In 1972.

Karmin Crash Your Party

It’s always great to see talented people get recognition, and that is why it is so great to see the online YouTube sensation, Karmin, finally get the credit that they deserve. This duo began showing off their musical talents through YouTube videos, and their obvious musical gifts were easily recognized and they now boast a hit single, Crash Your Party, which is available on iTunes, as well as a fast paced music video to accompany the song.

Nick an Amy are the two that make the music possible. Their single has even been featured recently on Amazon as the hit song of the day. They met each other while attending college and began writing music together and collaborating, and well, the rest is history! Most of their early music that they showed off online were covers of popular pop songs. With a huge fan base that is ever growing and a promising career in the music industry, you are sure to hear a lot more from Karmin in the near future.

The Hunger Games: Safe & Sound

With the anticipation of The Hunger Games movies just months away everyone was excited to hear about a new single released from the soundtrack that features Taylor Swift and The Civil Wars! It was quite shocking to learn that Taylor Swift is going to be a part of the original motion picture soundtrack, but then again they do need amazing artist to assist the hopefully amazing movies that they have made to accompany the fans of the book series. As of now no other news about the soundtrack has been released, but you can buy this song on iTunes now! The new question that remains is who else will be on the whole oficial soundtrack once it is released? That is a question that only Lionsgate, and time can answer!

Youtopia

So you’ve all herd of Owl City, I’m quite sure you have. Did you know that he has a few singles out there that somehow have slid under the radar? Ah, you should’ve known that! For a while now the song Youtopia by Adam Young from Owl City and musically adapt Armin van Buuren has been blasting it’s way across the internet, but never given much attention. Well, now there is an oficial music video for it that features none other than Adam himself! It’s rare for a single this unknown to get a music video, much a legit one with the artist himself featured in it.

Now, I’m not quite sure what is going on in the video, obviously she is recreating memories of a love she has lost, but at times it comes off a little creepy. Watch it and you will know what I mean. The romance scenes seem a tad rehearsed and fake, but hey, Adam is a musician, not an actor! The girl however, she could do better and to my knowledge she is an actress. For example, notice when she wakes up towards the end…she just pops her eyes open! Normally, to seem less scripted, one would expect a slow opening of the eyes for a more dramatic realization that reality has sunk in. Anyway, we liked the video, watch and determine for yourself!

Taylor Swift Is Ours

If there is one person who knows how to make an impression, that person would be Taylor Swift. After coming out with her latest album everyone suspected that we wouldn’t hear anything else from her with the exception of a few singles here and there and television and concert appearances. We know another album is inevitable, but that would take some time, especially with Taylor, she puts her heart and soul into her meaningful lyrics. She recently surprised everyone with a few singles that are amazing and possibly better than a few on the actual album! One song in particular deserves recognition, that song is “Ours”.

In the song “Ours”, Taylor gives the listener a simple tune, that is quite possibly the most catchy thing we’ve listened to in weeks, and sings some lyrics with meaning that no doubt relates to her life somehow but can be transfered to the lives of the listeners. Taylor has showed us before how relatable she is, and this song is no exception. While the color of her dress is all that changed about the album cover for these few new singles that are now out, and no doubt topping charts somewhere right now, but the mood is slightly different in these new singles than that of the album. These songs show a much lighter side of the music that was only shown in small bits on the album. The published single is a more upbeat song compared to when she performed it at the CMA’s. We have both the CMA version and the new refined version here for you to listen to! Which do you prefer? We liked the new version better.

Regardless of a poor choice in album cover, we would’ve loved to see some brand new album covers featuring Taylor and possibly settings that relate to each single, we still love her new songs, especially “Ours”. It gets an easy 10 out of 10 here at Toast Pop! Have a listen for yourself!

Ellie Goulding’s Lights Interactive Game

If you have ever heard Ellie Goulding, you will automatically recognize her unique voice in her single ‘Lights’. Like her other songs, ‘Lights’ gives you a light, upbeat feeling. However, unlike her other songs, there is an interactive game to go along with the single. To go along with the free, bubbly feeling that comes with her song ‘Lights’ is a small game. It begins with the introduction, where the background is fading in, only black and white.

When her voice comes in, a light, similar to a shooting star appears. The longer you hold down your mouse, the faster the light travels. Moving your mouse also directs the light. When the chorus kicks in, the world of black and white turns to different colors. All along, the circles in the background bounce to the beat.

There is also a part when twitter usernames show up in the background. On the bottom ofthe loading page, there is an option to tweet about the site, and have your own show up in the interactive colorful world of ‘Lights’. After the first chorus, strips of color line along with the circles, leaving you in a world that’s even more colorful and bright. More thing happen as you progress through the song. The interactive game that goes along with ‘Lights’ fits very rightfully with the song. Lights Siberia

Have you been searching for something new and original to listen to lately? Does everything on the radio sound the same and leave you hanging? If you answered yes to the previous questions, don’t worry the search is over. Canadian electropop star Lights recently released her second album, Siberia, and the sound is bigger and better than before.

Even if you are not familiar with Lights, this album is a great way to get introduced to her unique sound. It begins with title track, Siberia, and it immediately sets the album up for success. Her vocals are light and almost ghost-like along with lyrics that will get stuck in your head (in a good way). Lights also incorporates dubstep on a few tracks. At first, I thought this would affect her soft vocals, but it adds an element of surprise. Siberia has several tracks that are worth mentioning; for example, Toes, Banner, And Counting…, and Peace Sign. Each of these songs has a good beat, powerful lyrics, and conveys an emotion.

Not all artists are lucky enough to produce an album that has something for everyone. This album is pop, electro, indie pop, dubstep, and it also features rap. I highly recommend purchasing Siberia on iTunes so you can experience it for yourself.
