When Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone was published, I don’t think J.K. Rowling anticipated how popular it would be. Readers were introduced to a fantasy world that was full of adventure, friendship, and the ongoing conflict of good vs. evil. Her creation and our imaginations were brought to the big screen when Warner Brothers began filming the movies. Even though the final book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, was released in 2007, fans still had the movies to look forward to. But with the last movie, the realization finally set in that this was our last time being with Harry. I’ll admit, I felt as if my childhood was finally ending. I had just turned eighteen and I was starting a new chapter of my life. When J.K. Rowling announced that she was starting a new project called Pottermore, I was thrilled.
Pottermore has been in production since 2009 and is currently only available to those who gained early access and they act as beta testers. I am fortunate enough to be one of the beta testers. The website will sell e-books as well as audio books to all seven of the Harry Potter books. That’s not all Pottermore will have for fans, J.K. Rowling is releasing more detailed information and back stories on the characters we have come to know and love. You go through each chapter and learn new things about the world of Harry Potter. Some highlights of the first book are getting your very own wand and getting sorted into one of the Houses at Hogwarts: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, or Slytherin. You also get to brew potions and attend Dueling Club. Much like the students at Hogwarts, you will be able to earn points and lose points for your house. Not all books are available at once to explore. There is also no set date to unlock the next book. Pottermore is available to everyone sometime in October 2011.
