A Whimsical Twist on Practical Houseware

Wolfum creator Annabel Inganni spent nine years in apparel design before her designs took an interesting turn in 2010. Inganni is now creating household items like linen napkins, bookends, and coasters, but her flair for the unique provides a whimsical and stylish twist to these seemingly traditional pieces.

Los Angeles based Wolfum makes simple, everyday products from organic cotton, recycled poly twill, and FSC certified walnut. Quality materials mean lasting items, and lasting items mean less replacement and waste. If that wasn’t enough, bold patterns and colors like sage, olive, and navy adorn each hand-made product.

Wolfum’s collection of unique linens have a timeless appearance, with patterns that could have easily been taken from a trunk of beloved vintage items or used to embellish a modern tabletop. Wolfum’s colorful animal bookends and wall hangers also add a fanciful feel the the collection. Tigers, rabbits, coyotes, and a slew of other creatures in a variety of delightful patterns and colors would be perfect for a child or adult.

Whether it’s a mix-and-match collection or a coordinated set, Wolfum products are Inganni’s answer to a boring room. U.S. made and built to last, Wolfum’s whimsical products can be purchased at California shops like ST&NDARD GOODS and La La Ling, as well as Wolfum’s website.

Common, but Rare: Zumreed

When it comes to music devices nowadays, they can be personalized and customized in many ways. Music devices are available in different colors, styles, and memory programming. iTunes can recognize anybody’s musical tastes and suggest tunes based on what is purchased and downloaded. Then there’s an endless supply of musical accessories available almost everywhere you go.

Speakers, earbuds, and headphones can be found in any color under the sun. Some can be found with unique artwork or brand logos stamped on them. Products from Zumreed are just more musical device accessories in that sea of endless choices. One of the more unique things about these products is that the company is based out of Japan. Product browsing is available online at Zumreed.net, but you cannot purchase anything directly off the internet if you’re not in Japan. Another difference about Zumreed compared to others is that they carry more products. Zumreed is the first I’ve seen to carry all three- speakers, earbuds, and headphones. In addition, other Zumreed “musicgoods” include iPhone stands and carrying cases, phone plug adapters for earpieces or speakers, and cord wraps.

Though Zumreed accessories are like every other audible attachment out there, they’re a rare brand. As mentioned earlier, online purchasing is unavailable in America. Many Urban Outfitter retailers carry Zumreed products, but some states have other carriers. Highlight the “Where to Buy” box on the website to find a Zumreed carrier near you.

Core Bamboo: A New Kind of Bowl

We were fortunate enough to be born into a more privileged environment. We view it as our responsibility to help those who weren’t.

Those words come straight from Core Bamboo’s website. The business, which sells dining, prep, and serving equipment made from organically grown bamboo, employs more than 2,000 employees around the world. These artisans and their communities all benefit from Core Bamboo’s presence, which might provide anything from medical opportunities to recreation.

Although it doesn’t necessarily seem like the go-to material for creating dishes, Core Bamboo has created several successful lines which include everything from napkin rings and pepper shakers to knives and bowls. Bamboo is lightweight, strong, naturally anti-microbial, and regenerative, making it a perfect candidate for reusable dishware. A simple hand wash using warm water and soap will keep pieces clean, and Core Bamboo suggests a light rubbing with food safe mineral oil to regenerate a tired-looking bowl.

In addition to knowing that every bowl comes from a sustainable grass rather than glass or wood, buyers will also be excited to know that these eco-friendly items also look great. Whether it’s a basic bamboo finish, a smooth solid coat of paint, or the elegant zebra-like stripes created by crushed bamboo, these items make a simple yet intriguing aesthetic statement.

The entire collection can easily be ordered directly from Core Bamboo’s website. Shops like Macy’s and Kitchen Couture also carry some pieces.

Yardsellr: A New Kind of Yard Sale

A used pink bathrobe, a rare mint snowglobe, a Smurf T.V. tray. These are things that can be found in Weird Al Yankovick’s parody-song “Ebay” and on yardsellr.com. This site is much like Ebay, a user-friendly website where one’s junk can be bought and sold. The main difference in the websites would be the style in which products are organized. Items on Yardsellr are more specifically organized. For example, search “Dolls and Bears” on Ebay, you find a variety of different Barbie dolls as well as baby dolls, American Girl dolls, and a choice of stuffed bears. Looking on Yardsellr, you can find Barbie dolls in their own “block” and stuffed animals in their own according to what kind you’re looking for. Also Yardsellr is social network-oriented. You can get to know a seller in a more personal sense by clicking under the “Meet the Seller” box. There you have the option of finding the seller on Facebook, or sending them a private message. When obtaining your purchase, you sometimes have the option of meeting the seller face-to-face to receive your item.

Yardsellr.com has the atmosphere of yard sale shopping in your own neighborhood. This website can make an interesting networking outlet for avid collectors. Pursue your passions online for a reasonable price and get to know the kindred spirits selling them. Looking for another pet rock, an Alf alarm clock, or Shatner’s old toupee? Find them on Yardsellr.com!

Apple Gets Planted in Grand Central Station

Everything is bigger in New York City-the buildings, the crowds, the traffic congestion, and now Apple’s newest retail store. According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple opened a new store in the Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan, New York last week at 10am on Friday, December 9th. This makes the fifth Apple store in New York City and one of three-hundred worldwide. It overlooks the main concourse on the east and northeast balconies. According to Apple, 2,500 people awaited the store’s grand opening and had received nearly 4,000 visitors before noon. To date, this is the biggest of Apple’s stores; spanning 23,000 square feet.

While the store itself has all the necessities of your typical Apple store, aesthetically it’s conformed to the style of the historical landmark. One feature very unique to this store would be the fifteen minute” express classes” on the use of Apple’s products. These classes are intended for commuters who are looking to kill time between departures. Also offered through iPhone apps are self-checkout and personal pick-up services for the customers on the go.

Even though Apple is not sharing revenues (unlike other venders in the building) with the Metropolitan Transit Authority- the company owning the Grand Central Terminal- they believe Apple’s presence quadruples rent and will strongly increase foot traffic to other retailers in the same area. Apple is shelling out $180 per square foot over their ten year lease on the space. Apple’s bill for the commercial space also includes paying $5 million to buy out the lease of the prior tenant, $1.1 million for yearly rent, and $2.5 million for construction. This is certainly a big bite for the big apple! The next time you’re experiencing the enormous grandeur of the city that never sleeps, stop by Grand Central and see Apple’s huge new store for yourself!
